Owners - Duane and Carrie Everhart

Duane and Carrie started Shawnee Acres in 2002 as a small breeding and boarding operation located on Alton Rd in Wilson, NC.  In 2007 the facility was moved to it's current 20 acre location in Lucama, NC.  Having bought this land in spring of 2007, Duane and Carrie built the "new" Shawnee Acres from the ground up.  Shawnee Acres today is still somewhat of a work in progress.

Trainer - Carrie Everhart

Carrie began her horse "career" as a junior rider in the early 1970's.  She came up through the ranks of the U.S Pony Clubs, ultimately attaining her H-A rating in 1976.  She showed in hunter/jumper shows and evented extensively through the 1970's and 1980's.  All of her mounts were self trained, including "Cherie Noir", "Special Edition" and "Aragorn",  During this time she operated Hawk Hill Farm owned by her parents in Mebane, NC and Black Horse Run in Raleigh, NC.  She moved on to assistant manager and instructor at Lochill Farm in Hillsborough, NC.  While there she and John Daly, owner, designed and rebuilt the cross country courses from maiden level through Training and in 1991 began hosting the Lochill Farm Horse Trials.  Carrie also rode on the NCDCTA Adult Championship team at Gladstone, NJ in 1992 and she was Chef D'equip for the NCDCTA 1993 Adult Championship team.  In 1994 she began Highland Stables in Bahama, NC and was the owner, manager and instructor at that facility until 1997.  At that time she took a hiatus from teaching and training returning to the non-pro ranks and showing her quarter horses and appaloosas in non-pro competition.  She made the decision in 2006 to return to teaching and has been instructing full time ever since.  Her appaloosas have achieved national recognition in ACAAP competition in Dressage and Combined training.  She has qualified two appaloosas for the World Championships.  She has served on the N.C. Horse Council Education committee since 2005, and is a carded open horse show judge.  She has had many students that have gone on to win state and regional awards in 4-H, as well as numerous year end awards on a variety of horse show circuits.

Duane Everhart

Duane is a native american and is a member of the Piqua Sept of the Shawnee Indian tribe.  Hence the name of the facility he and Carrie own and operate.  Duane met Carrie in 2000 while she was actively showing her appaloosas.  He had not previously had much experience with horses, but that was soon to change.  He was rapidly "immersed" in the horse world, and soon Duane and Carrie were building the first Shawnee Acres farm.  Duane is active in his Indian tribal functions and is in the Coast Guard reserves, having served several tours of active duty during wartime.  He teaches at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro.  He is the main grounds keeper, carpenter and fix-it man for Shawnee Acres.
